Evaluation.

Evaluation.

My college magazine uses many conventions by having a model on the front cover taking up most of the page. The tagline is underneath my magazine title in the masthead, Unconventionally my title is in the centre of my cover unlike most magazines where it is in the left hand corner. There is also a cover line in the lower right hand corner, showing there is more content in the magazine and making the audience want to carry on reading and reading more articles. My magazine does not have a barcode as the other college magazines that I researched did not have one on, and where usually free.

My college magazine ‘sixth style’ targets all students this particular issue mostly targets first years, as it tries to help new students adapt to sixth form live as A levels are a big jump up from GCSE’s. The magazine is for all types of students, this is why on the cover a student is featured instead of a teacher or a parent. The students are represented positively as they are seen as nice hard working students and are not seen to be up to no good.

I included stories that have an influence on the students working lives and their social lives, such as Wyke’s Halloween party and learning and revision tips. I also used a young student so the audience can relate to the story and apply the story to their lives.

While I have been doing this project, I found that the blog website we used was easy and clear to understand and that it was useful and helpful to our project and it became so much easier than creating a large portfolio that has to be carried around and as I am not very creative this helped improve the quality of my work. Even though doing this project helped improve my Photoshop skills I still feel there is a lot I need to learn as I still struggle to use the programme. There is lots more I would like to achieve with this project and further project but I still feel I do not have enough experience or knowledge of the programme.

Final Cover Analysis Using L.I.I.A.R

Final Cover Analysis Using L.I.I.A.R
Language - The picture shows a girl who is writing, showing you that she is a hard working student. The colour of her vest top is the same colour of the glow around the letters. The story about the Halloween party has a ghostly glow around it and the use of the word disappear adds to the Halloween theme and ghosts. The model is represented in a positive way as they are smiling, and they obviously enjoy the work they are doing. The cover is conventional as the tagline is in a smaller font under the title, I placed the masthead in the centre of my cover.

Institution – Wyke is a sixth form college that promotes the idea of respect equality and fair treatment. It respects the idea of learning and tries to get the best out of it’s students. Most of the students are 16 – 19. This is why on the cover I used a young model as this represents the students who are the target audience of my magazine.

Ideology – Wyke presents the idea of positive learning on the highest standard. Every one is taught to respect and treat everybody fairly. And Wyke is proud of its sports teams and it’s high pass rate.

Audience – The audience of my college magazine is the students of Wyke, The target age range is 16 – 19 year olds. 50% of Wyke students live in Hull, However the other 50% live in the East Riding.

Representation – The students in my magazine are very positive, as they are all happy and working hard, They are not shown partying or causing trouble which may give them a negative representation.

Draft Cover

Draft Cover

This is my draft cover I did on the computer with Photoshop,. I chose not to use this one as at the bottom, all of the text was the same font and size and also the same colour and it looked very boring. I also had no room to put any more strap lines. Also the main picture was two small and the headline in my opinion did not stand out enough, But near the arm in my picture it looked blank and bare but there was still not enough room to fit in any stories.

Final Image

Final Image

I finally chose this image as it mostly portrays what my cover story was trying to say. It shows that how people should now that they have moved to sixth form should take care of their own learning as they are now given more freedom and respect. The learning and homework demands are much greater then school and some find it hard to adjust the purpose of my magazine is to help people cope with this dramatic change and give them learning and revision tips.

Unused Photo's.

Image One – This is were my model is stood at the board, this is to fit in with the cover story. ‘be your own teacher

Image Two – This is another angle I have taken, to help cover the main story.

Image Three – This is a picture of the building, this helps the audience establish where this picture has been taken and to help the magazine.

Image Four and Five – This was to help cover one of my strap lines of my magazine ‘new building oak opens

Image Six – This shows a picture of the Ash building, this is to also show where my college magazine is for.

Image Seven – This shows the audience where abouts wyke I ma talking about.

Image Eight – This is an establishing shot, showing the areas of wyke college.

Image Nine and Ten – These pictures where to show the new garden area that has been built in the college.

Draft Of Cover #3

Third Draft.

This draft I decided to draw after I had chosen a title for my magazine, The mast head includes the title of my magazine and the tagline. On the left hand side this has been cut off for all my feature stories and strap lines to be placed. As this draft is not finished on the right hand side is where I would of placed my final picture.

Cover Of Draft #2

Second Draft.

I drew this draft after I had chosen what main cover story my magazine was going to feature. This was so I could get an idea on how to take the picture and how I could incorporate the mid shot into my cover that was stated in the brief. I did this draft so I could get an idea how and where I was going to place the pictures and text. The picture show a girl stood at the front of a class pretending to be a teacher this links into the cover story of be your own teacher. It also states a price and where the money goes to.

Cover Of Draft #1

First Draft.

This is the first draft for the front cover of my college magazine, The picture shows somebody sat a desk with a text book stood up at the opposite side with a pile of papers in-between them. This represents students as hard working and proves that they use Wyke’s facilities appropriately. It all shows the ideology that Wyke represents, hard working and respectful students.

My magazine theme.

This issue of my college magazine is the halloween addition all ready in time for the 31st October.

The cover and contents will all be in orange and black to get ready for the spooky season.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis Of Two Other College Magazines.

Sixth Sense - Blackpool sixth form college

Language – The title of the magazine is very large and is in the centre it is the first thing to catch your eye, It is black on a white background, which stands out well, the word sense is underneath the word in the same colour and font, just smaller. The date and the number issue is also underneath the title in a smaller size font. The picture is of a women holding a book, the main cover of this issue is ‘have you read any good books lately?’  This helps the students get involved with the magazine. The women in the picture has a I love Blackpool T-shirt this helps the reader define where the college is located. The main cover story is in orange font, the strap lines are also in orange just a smaller font, the story is in a smaller black font. On the contents page, the writing is still black with an orange border the font is clear and easy to understand.

Institution – The college is located in Blackpool, it is a sixth form college just like Wyke, it only has students between 16 – 19. The college has many schemes in place to make sure all their students have the same equal and fair opportunities, such as a disability scheme,  race scheme and also gender equality scheme to show that the college has given the students all the same fair equal chances. The college has about 1,900  full time students, with a 98% pass rate.

Ideology – The college shows that it takes in interest in the students leisure activities and also their opinions. As it asks about their preferences on books they have read, it also shows a pride of where the college is located, the women is also wearing a cheap girly cowboy hat this shows a funny side and gives the feel that Blackpool is a fun seaside town. The college promotes the value of respect, inclusion and global citizenship.

Audience – The audience of the college will be 16 – 19 years old as it is a sixth form college. There will be a range of male and females, also there will be a racial diversity. And people from all sorts of backgrounds.

Representation – In the magazine the people are seen in a very positive day, with a freedom of what they want to do. On the contents page show a range of people male and female, they are represented positively as they all seem happy and the are dressed and look like what they want. There is also a picture of the teaching staff, showing that they are equal to the students.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis Of Two Other College Magazines.

The LC – The Lewisham college.

Language – The title of the magazine is in conventionally in the top left hand corner, It is big and bold and stands out on the photograph behind. The college magazine is called The LC as this is short for The Lewisham College. The main headline on the front page is about a football tournament. The picture of the front cover has been cleverly shot in a mirror to give both sides of a man who is dressed fully in a football kit, and holding a football, He is wearing the local football kit, of where The Lewisham College is based. Also at the bottom of the page there are two more headlines, one is about a fashion show taking place within the college this is too target the female audience since the main story and photograph is stereotypically targeted at males. The contents page has a letter from the principal with a picture of her placed at the top, the title of the news section is yellow and white on a black background, this stands out very well, the contents is just white with black writing, simply stating what is on each page, in the news section there is a picture of the story and a brief outline out of the story to tease the reader into reading further on. At the bottom is also has a link on how to follow the college magazine on facebook and twitter, this is to help target there younger audience.

Institution – Lewisham College is a further education, Vocational College in the South East London. The college has 13,600 students, the average age of their students is 29 years old. There are about 2,600 students aged between 16 and 19. In all of the students who go to the college only 43% of the actually life in Lewisham itself. They do a range of  vocational courses such as beauty and A Levels such as business studies. They have many great facilities for their students such as cafes, beauty salon and a fitness centre.

Ideology – The cover of the college magazine shows a football player, the main story is for a football tournament that is coming up and the college is going to take part this shows that the college has more then just it’s teaching to offer in more conventional subjects, It takes learning out of the classroom and shows that the students can have a fun active lifestyle. As the college is entering into a a football tournament it shows that they have a good record for sport as the headline has a year it insinuates that the college may have taken part in the past. The college tagline is that it is the colleges mission to create successful futures.

Audience – As the average age for a Lewisham college is 29 years old the magazine features things that anybody any age can get involved in the magazine they talk to the student governors as these affect all the students that go to the college they can all be interested, there is also a story to target both sexes such a football is stereotypically for males and there is also a fashion show taking place that is stereotypically linked to girls. As the college only 43% of the students actually live in Lewisham they cover news stories that are to do with Lewisham and the surrounding area.

Representation – In this magazine the male and females are represented rather stereotypically, For example the footballer could have been female, instead it’s male, All people who are to do with the fashion show that is featured on the contents page, they are all females.  All the people who are featured in pictures are represented positive, as all the pictures are very flattering and all people look happy.

Outline of the Brief.

Preliminary Exercise.

I am going to use an image manipulation program (photo shop) to produce a new front page and a contents page for a new college magazine. I will be producing the magazine for Wyke college in the west of Hull. My front cover will contain a photograph of a student, they will be appropriately positioned to fill the needs of my magazine. I will also place a masthead appropriate to my magazine. I will also have some text on the cover such as a tag line below the masthead. Also headlines for the stories contained in my magazine.

College Magazine Brief

Analysis of the Brief

I am going to analyse the brief using the L.I.I.A.R. acronym.

Language - the language of the college magazine, on the front cover the masthead should be big and bold and should be the thing that stands out most on the page, as this is the first thing to catch the readers attention. Below the masthead should be a tag line this should be a short snappy sentence that sells the magazine to the reader. The front page should also contain a photo usually symbolising what the main story within the magazine is, it should also take up most of the cover. This photograph can sometimes cover parts of the masthead.

Institution - The institution for the new college magazine will be Wyke college, Wyke college is located in West Hull, It found it's name from the old viking name for Hull. Wyke college has on average 1300 students, which 50% of people travel to Wyke from the outside of Hull. Wyke is a sixth form college and rarely takes on mature students. The college has recently had a £20million investment creating it's newest building Oak which has the most modern technology and the latest equipment for their students. The students from Wyke have a 99.7% pass rate, showing that the students and teachers are at their academic peak.

Ideology -  The ideology of Wyke is to show to respect everyone, and that we are all equal and that as we are at a sixth form college education is now our choice and has become a benefit with top teachers. Also Wyke promotes a healthy lifestyle with a great record within Sport for all of it's different teams.

Audience The audience for the new college magazine will be 16-19 years old, most of these students live in Hull which is the 10th largest city and has a large sphere of influence, Wyke also has students from the East Riding and the magazine should refer to things happening within the whole area.

Representation - The college magazine will be read by students but also parents, Students will be represented in a positive way to show the parents that the students are in a positive clean environment and that while they are at Wyke they will achieve the best results possible. This gives the parents a good view of Wyke and are more likely to let their children attend the college.
